The piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is often considered to be the gold standard for the proper design, operation and maintenance of plants in the chemical process industries (CPI), including chemical, oil-and-gas facilities, mining operations, food-processing plants, and water- and wastewater-treatment plants. The P&ID provides important information for manufacturing and installing...

This article provides guidance to the designer and operator of a safety-instrumented system (SIS), with an emphasis on conducting measurements. The use of best practices to ensure the strength of the overall system design, and the use of instrument diversity to combat common causes of failure, are covered briefly. Greater detail are provided on the use of new technologies — in particular, new...

Maximizing quality, minimizing cost and meeting schedule milestones are ever-present challenges in large projects. While significant progress has been made in certain areas of facility construction, the management of project-related information continues to struggle. Information received by operators tends to be incomplete and inaccurate, while the cost of producing it remains high. Common reasons for...

Pinch analysis emerged as a systematic design tool during the energy crisis of the late 1970s, particularly for the optimization of heat-exchanger networks and other heat-recovery systems [ 1 ]. Since then, ongoing breakthroughs in the use of pinch analysis have helped to establish mass- and property-integration techniques to assist with waste-minimization efforts [ 2, 3 ]. More recently, pinch analysis...

In recent years, a growing number of projects throughout the chemical process industries (CPI) have been carried out using Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) contracts. Because such contracts typically involve the work of numerous subcontractor parties, they tend to be complex. As such, specialized tools are required to manage their information- and project-management needs. In general, operating companies...

Project management can be a messy, complex issue for all involved parties and, likely, the most hair-raising aspect of all is project handover from the EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contractor to the chemical processor. In the past, this literally involved a truck pulling up with cartons and boxes chock full of engineering documents, drawings, operations manuals and catalogs. From there, the...

Exactly three years ago, in the July 2005 issue, this page began with a reference to a perfect storm, whereby then-record-high oil prices of $60/bbl and a relief in capital costs were expected to get the chemical process industries (CPI) back on the building track. I doubt that anyone envisioned, however, the magnitude in the capital-project surge that would indeed ensue or that those "record" oil prices...

Despite successful completion of major engineering objectives, the deadlines of project milestones are often missed by weeks or even months while the supporting, official-document packages are being assembled. These costly delays can be avoided with Sword Inc.'s (edlinks.che.com/6893-535) C2Share, launched at daratech Plant 2007 Conference (both Houston). An add-on application to SharePoint...
