LP OxoSM Technology Licensed to PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical Co.

The new LP Oxo facility is part of a grassroots  petrochemical complex

PetroChina Sichuan Petrochemical Co., Ltd.  (PetroChina) has chosen LP Oxo SM SELECTORSM 10 Technology for its new facility in  Chengdu, capital city of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province.  LP  Oxo Technology is cooperatively offered by Dow Technology Licensing, a business unit of  The Dow Chemical Co. (www.dow.com) and its consolidated affiliates and Davy Process Technology Ltd. (London; www.davyprotech.com), a Johnson Matthey company. The Sichuan plant will include the largest custom-designed, single-line, low-pressure hydroformylation unit built anywhere in the world, with a design production of 338,000 m.t./yr of n- and iso-butyraldehydes. This train will supply two alcohol production lines, with the first slated to produce 81,800 m.t./yr of 2-ethylhexanol (2EH), and the second to produce 211,900 m.t./yr of n-butanol and 30,800 m.t./yr of iso-butanol. Design and engineering is scheduled to begin in December 2007 and  startup is planned for September 2010. The new LP Oxo facility is part of a grassroot  petrochemical complex that PetroChina centerd on an 800,000 m.t./yr ethylene  plant, which will be the largest in southwest China.

LP Oxo SM Technology is a low-pressure hydroformylation process that uses propylene and  synthesis gas (a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) to produce normal- and isobutyraldehydes. These butyraldehydes are then converted into 2-ethylhexanol (2EH) and  normal- and iso-butanol. Butanols are used as solvents for coatings and adhesives, and 2EH  is used to produce plasticizers for PVC. For more than 30 years, Davy and Dow have comarketed and delivered LP Oxo Technology licenses and services.  To date, 33 projects have  been implemented in 15 countries, on four continents. LP Oxo Technology is recognized as  the world’s leading licensed oxo technology, contributing to more than 85% of the  world’s licensed propylene-based oxo capacity.
