LyondellBasell (Rotterdam, the Netherlands; www.lyondellbasell.com) announced that Dongming Hengchang Petrochemical Co. has selected LyondellBasell Spheripol polypropylene technology for a plant in Heze City, Shandong Province, China with a capacity of 200,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr). Polypropylene grades produced with the Spheripol process are used to manufacture film for the safe storage of food, plastic pipes for the delivery of drinking water and wastewater removal and sterile syringes in modern healthcare.

The latest fifth generation Spheripol includes process improvements that further maximize operational efficiency. The technology allows for the production of a broad spectrum of homopolymers, random copolymers and heterophasic impact and specialty impact copolymers, as well as terpolymers. Application examples of PP products produced by Spheripol are thin-walled, rigid packaging items that are light and strong, packaging containers that preserve food, and polypropylene pipes that safely transport water.
