Jacobs Awarded Contract by Ashta Chemicals

Gerald Ondrey

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Pasadena, Calif.; www.jacobs.com) says that it was awarded a contract to support Ashta Chemicals Inc. in making significant upgrades to its chlorine and potassium-based chemicals plant located in Ashtabula, Ohio.

Company officials did not disclose the contract value, but noted that Ashta is making the $60-million investment to improve operational efficiency and reduce the plant’s energy consumption and environmental impact.

Under the terms of the contract, Jacobs is providing engineering, procurement and construction management services for the project, which is expected to take between 24 and 30 months to complete.

The investment program includes replacing the plant’s current mercury cell processing technology with membrane cell technology, an environmentally sustainable alternative that is expected to reduce power consumption by approximately 20%, increase component lifetimes, and improve production efficiency and worker safety.
