Stamicarbon wins licensing and supply contracts for urea plant in China

Gerald Ondrey

Stamicarbon B.V. (Sittard, The Netherlands;, the Licensing and IP Center of Maire Tecnimont S.p.A. (Milan, Italy;, has been awarded two contracts for a new urea plant with Inner Mongolia Erdos Chemical Industry Group Co. in the People’s Republic of China. One is for the license and process design package and the other is for supply of the high-pressure proprietary equipment for the plant.

The plant will have a capacity of 2,860 metric tons per day (m.t./d) of prilled urea and will be located in Qi Pan Jing, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, PRC. Engineering work will be performed by China Chengda Engineering Co. Start-up is planned for 2014.

The plant will use Stamicarbon’s Urea2000Plus technology, which features Stamicarbon’s unique Pool condenser and a high-pressure synthesis loop fabricated entirely in Safurex stainless steel. Safurex is the leading corrosion-resistant construction material for high-pressure urea equipment. It was developed by Stamicarbon in collaboration with Sandvik of Sweden. Stamicarbon directly supplies Safurex-protected proprietary equipment on the strength of its unmatched expertise and experience in design, engineering and fabrication, acquired in the course of many urea plant projects.

This is the second urea project for which Stamicarbon has provided Inner Mongolia Erdos Chemical Industry Co. with technology and equipment. The first was contracted in 2005 by a daughter company, Erdos United Chemicals Co. It comprised a revamp of two small urea plants based on Chinese technology into one new large plant using Stamicarbon’s Urea2000Plus technology. That plant was completed in 2009. With a capacity of 3,520 m.t./d, it is still the biggest operational urea plant in China.
