Reduce oxygen waste in ozone generation with this O2-recovery system

A new adsorption-based technology can separate ozone from oxygen in O3-generating systems, allowing recycling of unreacted O2.


In corona-discharge O3 generation, O2 molecules are split by passage through an electric field to create free oxygen atoms, which quickly combine with O2 molecules to form O3. In this process, however, around 90% of the O2 remains unconverted, which wastes the pure oxygen.


Linde LLC (Bridgewater, N.J.; www.lindeus.com) developed the adsorption technology to separate ozone for use in water and wastewater treatment, while recycling unconverted O2 back to the O3 generator. Linde introduced the Ozora oxygen recovery system at Weftec 2017 in October.


“The Ozora system uses a specialized sieve material to selectively capture O3, while allowing O2 molecules to pass through,” explains Peter Studer, program manager for the chemicals and environment industries at Linde LLC. “A subsequent desorption step with air frees the ozone for use in water treatment.”


Ozora can be retrofitted to existing ozone generators, including large-scale generators for municipal water treatment systems, and with a lease arrangement, there would be very little capital expenditure, Studer says. In joint tests with Suez S.A. (Paris, France; www.suez.com) 1,000-lb/d O3-generation systems, the technology proved capable of reducing O2 consumption by 60%.


Linde set up a pilot plant for the process in New Jersey, where it was validated, and is working with water treatment operators to adopt the technology.
