A Silcone Gasket that Properly Binds to Powder-Coated Metals

| By Chemical Engineering

This firm’s silicone-foam gaskets, its closed-cell silicone sponge enclosure-gaskets and its cushioning-pads are now outfitted with two high-strength, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesives: A 3M 9485 acrylic adhesive for binding thick silicone-sponge gaskets to most metal surfaces and a 3M 9490LE acrylic adhesive more suitable for thin-walled gaskets. Capable of withstanding brief high temperature excursions up to 400°F and long-term temperatures up to 300°F without slumping or shearing, the 9485 adhesive has an ultimate bonding strength of 150 lb/in. of width on stainless steel and is 0.005-in. thick. The 9490LE adhesive is 0.0067-in. thick film, in contrast, can withstand high-temperature excursions for brief periods up to 300°F, and long-term temperatures up to 200°F. The gaskets can be water jet cut or die cut to size, or slit-to-width into rolls for installation. — Stockwell Elastomerics, Inc., Philadelphia, Pa.
