A step closer to release for a new hydrotreating catalyst

Chiyoda Corp. (Kawasaki, Japan; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6898-535) has licensed its proprietary titania-supported catalyst for ultra-deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of gas oil to Axens (Paris, France; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6898-536). Axens is currently working on the final adjustment of industrial operating parameters, and plans to start commercial production of the new catalyst in the first quarter of 2008. The catalyst is based on a titania support, which has been known to offer higher HDS activity per unit area than conventional alumina-supported catalysts because of the loose interactions between the carrier and the metal catalyst (such a Mo and Co). But up to now, it has been difficult to prepare titania carriers with a sufficiently large surface area for commercial applications. This problem has been overcome by Chiyoda researchers, who developed a multi-gelation process for making the titania support (CE, June 2003, p. 19). With Chiyoda’s process, it has been possible to prepare titania-supported catalysts with surface areas of more than 160 m2/g, and a narrow pore-size distribution (around 8–10 nm). Such catalyst exhibits 2–3 times higher HDS activity while operating at temperatures 10 to 20°C…
