Borouge International expands mechanical recycling capacity in Germany and Austria

| By Mary Bailey

Borouge Group International AG (operating as Borouge International) announced investments to expand its European mechanical recycling capacity at its sites in Niedergebra, Germany, and Wildon, Austria.

The expansion strengthens the ability of Borouge International (Vienna, Austria) to meet growing customer demand for mechanically recycled polyolefins produced in Europe. It also supports customers in securing more reliable access to circular materials driven by brand preference, evolving regulatory requirements such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and supply resilience needs.

At Borouge International Niedergebra, formerly mtm plastics GmbH, annual output of recycled mixed polyolefin (rPO) materials will increase by nearly 9,000 metric tons. The facility transforms post-consumer mixed polyolefin waste into valuable recycled materials for a broad range of rigid applications. The additional capacity is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027.

At Borouge International Wildon, formerly Ecoplast Kunststoffrecycling GmbH, annual recycled polyethylene (rPE) output will increase by up to 5,000 metric tons. The additional capacity is expected to come on stream in the fourth quarter of 2027 and will support growing demand for recycled materials, particularly for flexible packaging applications.

Borouge International Elin Pelin in Bulgaria, a facility that produces more than 20,000 metric tons of premium-quality grades of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) annually, completes Borouge International’s European mechanical recycling portfolio and complements capabilities across flexible PE, rigid PP and mixed polyolefin streams.

Borouge International serves its customers with circular solutions in Europe and beyond. In North America, top-quality PE film grades are supplied from the Syndigo™ plant in Indiana, and in Asia, Borouge International collaborates with a wide portfolio of suppliers for recycled material.

“Circular materials are a strategic resource for Europe and around the world, not only to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements, but also to strengthen industrial competitiveness, brand differentiation and supply resilience,” said Dirk Langhammer, senior vice president, Circular Solutions, Borouge International. “The investments in our European recycling platform give an even larger range of customers more reliable access to circular polyolefin solutions, from premium Borcycle™ grades to fit-for-purpose Recleo™ materials tailored to diverse applications.”

With these investments, Borouge International continues to scale circular solutions globally, supporting customers with more reliable access to recycled polyolefins for a more competitive and resilient materials value chain.
