Chementator: Biomass-to-DME
By Gerald Ondrey |
As part of the European BioDME project, Haldor Topsøe A/S (Lyngby, Denmark; www.topsoe.com) and Chemrec will design and build a new plant for producing dimethyl ether (DME). Located at the Smurfit Kappa paper mill in Piteå, Sweden, the facility will gasify black liquor — a byproduct of paper production — and use Topsøe synthesis technology for making DME. Together with other partners in the project, the entire DME-as-fuel chain will be carried out, from DME production and distribution, to field testing with heavy vehicles. DME is a renewable alternative to petroleum-based fuels; the non-toxic chemical is said to deliver soot-free, low-exhaust combustion in vehicles.
