Caprolactam Genomatica (San Diego, Calif.; www.genomatica.com) recently announced the production of the world’s first renewably sourced ton of caprolactam, the key ingredient for nylon-6. The company made the caprolactam by fermenting plant sugars with engineered microbes, departing from the conventional route for nylon-6, which uses crude oil as a feedstock. Genomatica’s bio-based caprolactam will be used to produce 100% renewably sourced nylon that delivers equivalent performance to conventional nylon, but with lower environmental impact. Traditional nylon production from crude oil is responsible for an estimated 60 million ton/yr of greenhouse gas emissions, Genomatica says. The bio-based caprolactam is converted into nylon-6 polymer chips and yarn by Aquafil (Arco, Italy; www.aquafil.com), a major European nylon producer and Genomatica partner, in Slovenia.
