Chementator: New resin technology can reduce the weight of car parts

By Edited by Gerald Ondrey |

Toray Industries, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan; www.toray.co.jp) has developed a new high-cycle molding resin that has improved flow characteristics, hardening time and heat-resisting properties. The new resin enabled the company to achieve a resin flow time of 3 min, hardening time of 5 min, and glass transition temperature of higher than 140°C. As a result, it is now possible to perform mold-shaping of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) platforms for automobile flooring in 10 min. The CFRP platform (measuring 1.8 X 1.6 m) is half the weight, yet absorbs 1.5 times more energy (for collision safety) compared to platforms made by conventional steel technology, says Toray. This result is one achievement of a 5-year, $21.2-million research project to reduce the weight — and thereby lower fuel consumption — of automobiles. The project began in 2004 with support from New Energy Development Organization (NEDO; Kawasaki, Japan). Besides fundamentally redesigning the epoxy resin for resin-transfer molding (RTM), Toray and NEDO also developed the so-called Automatic 3D Forming Technology, which performs shape-based simulations for predicting 3D CFRP forming, and automates the forming and shape-cutting processes. The partners also…
