Chementator: This biodiesel reactor is made of duplex

Although many new biodiesel plants are sprouting up around the world, Perstorp Oxo AB’s (Stenungsund Sweden) 160,000 m.t./yr rapeseed-methyl-esters (RME) facility, now under construction at Stenungsund, will be the first to have a reactor made from duplex stainless steel. The two RME reactors will be made from 2304 (EN 1.4362) duplex stainless steel, supplied from Outokumpu Hot Rolled Plate (Degerfors, Sweden; edlinks.chemengonline.com/5830-543). Compared with Type 304, duplex 2304 is said to feature 55% higher strength and superior corrosion resistance. This allowed the reactor vessel wall thickness to be reduced by 30% compared to the original specification for standard austentic stainless steel grade 304 (EN 1.4301), which required a wall thickness of 75 mm. As a result, the plant investment cost is “considerably lower, says Outokumpu. The plant will start up early next year.   Click here for a full pdf version of the Chementator Section
