Chementator: This valve trim combines multiple noise-control mechanisms

Flowserve Corp. (Dallas, Tex.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/7370-569) has introduced a new noise-attenuating valve-trim for gaseous applications, one that simultaneously lowers the device’s manufacturing costs while improving its noise reduction capabilities. Like prior noise-attenuation trim, Flowserve’s Valtek Stealth is designed to reduce the velocity at the vena contracta (the point in a fluid stream where the diameter of the stream is the least) generated by the pressure drop across a closing or partially closed control valve. (For gaseous flow, valve noise increases proportionally to the velocity cubed.) The seat retainer consists of stacked disks to form a cylinder that diffuses the flow through a series of thin, pressure-, velocity- and sound-reducing channels prior to the valve’s closure. An initial battery of rapid V-shaped turns repeatedly redefines the flow direction greater than 90 deg., redirecting the passing fluid through rapid expansion when going into a turn and rapid contraction when coming out. In addition to frictional losses accrued due to contact with each of the thin channels’ walls, pressure is further reduced by this turbulence, thus decreasing the exit velocity.
