Coal-to-plastics

By Chemical Engineering |

Datang International Power Generation Co. Ltd. and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group (SNCG; both China) have awarded a contract in excess of €100 million to Lurgi AG (Frankfurt, Germany; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6891-535) as part of two projects (€1 billion per project) for making polypropylene (PP) from coal. The core of the new plants will utilize Lurgi technology for raw-gas conditioning, methanol synthesis [5,000 m.t./d with Lurgi’s MegaMethanol process — a recent Kirkpatrick-Achievement Award winner (CE, October 2005, p. 30)] and for methanol-to-propylene plants. Together, the industrial complexes will produce approximately 500,000 m.t. /yr of PP — the world’s largest plant — from coal.
