Epichlorohydrin

Dow Epoxy, a business unit of Dow Chemical Co. (Midland Mich.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6895-541) has selected Shanghai Chemical Industry Park as the site for its 150,000-m.t./yr glycerine-to-epichlorohydrin (GTE) plant and a 100,000-m.t./yr liquid-epoxy-resins plant. Both plants are expected to startup in the 2009–2010 timeframe. The GTE facility will be the first commercial application of Dow’s proprietary GTE technology, whereby glycerine — a byproduct of biodiesel production — is used to make epichlorohydrin, which follows last year’s launch of a GTE demonstration unit in Stade, Germany. Meanwhile, Solvay S.A. (Brussels, Belgium; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6895-542) started up a 10,000-m.t./yr epichlorohydrin facility at Tavaux, France. This plant is the first commercial application of Solvay’s Epicerol process (CE, March 2006, p. 14), which also uses biodiesel-byproduct glycerine as feedstock. Solvay is planning a further investment in a 100,000-m.t./yr Epicerol unit for its integrated site of Map Ta Phut, Thailand, which is slated to startup in mid 2009.
