Evonik plans more investment in Brazil

Evonik Industries AG (Essen, Germany; www.evonik.com) plans to build a new facility for producing hydrogen peroxide, which is used primarily in the production of cellulose and paper, at the Triunfo petrochemical complex near Porto Alegre, in southern Brazil. An investment volume of some €45 million has been budgeted for the new facility. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2009; the facility, with an annual capacity of 40,000 metric tons (m.t.), is to become operational in early 2011. With an annual capacity of over 600,000 m.t./yr, Evonik is already today the world’s second-largest producer of hydrogen peroxide. The global demand for applications in paper and cellulose bleaching is over 3 million m.t./yr. Evonik’s supervisory board still has to approve the investment plan for the facility. The Triunfo site is part of a chemical park and is strategically located right in the heart of continuously developing buyer industries. “The new facility in Porto Alegre will allow us to participate in Brazil’s dynamic market growth and to expand our excellent world-leading position,” says Werner Müller, chairman of Evonik’s executive board, in Brazil today.
