First working FDI prototype

By Gerald Ondrey |

Last month at the Namur Annual General Meeting in Bad Neuenbahr, Germany, the first working prototype of FDI (field device integration) was demonstrated. FDI device packages were used to integrate Foundation Fieldbus, HART and Profibus field devices of various manufacturers within an ABB process control system. Typical applications, such as parameter assignment, configuration, diagnostics and maintenance were demonstrated. The system makes use of prototypes of FDI standard host components developed by the FDI Cooperation, LLC (Karlsruhe, Germany; www.fdi-cooperation.com). The working prototype was developed to verify the FDI concepts, apply the standard host components in a system context and to demonstrate FDI functionality. The first draft of the FDI specifications is expected to be published by the end of this year. Conformance Test concepts are planned to be completed by mid 2012, and completion of the FDI standard host components, such as EDD Engine and User Interface (UI) Engine will be completed by the FDI Cooperation by the end of 2012.
