Glencore Ltd. (Baar, Switzerland) has announced the acquisition of a 45% stake in a recycling and remelting plant near Charleston, South Carolina. Glencore had previously provided funding to the facility in exchange for marketing rights. The remaining 55% stake will be held by Alumicore, who will also operate the plant.
This partnership reinforces Glencore’s active participation in supporting a resilient and sustainable domestic aluminum supply chain in the United States. Glencore is already a major investor in the sector through its 30% stake in Century Aluminum, the largest producer of primary aluminum in the U. S.
Alumicore brings proven operational expertise to the partnership, operating a similar facility in Monessen, Pennsylvania and developing a second state of the art processing and melting facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which will incorporate advanced sortation. Together, these plants are expected to have the capacity to recycle more than 120’000 tonnes of aluminum per year.
Glencore and Alumicore look forward to working closely together to advance the plant’s development, drive future growth, and deliver value to both the U.S. aluminium industry and local communities in South Carolina.
