Imperial Oil completes construction of renewable diesel plant in Canada

| By Mary Bailey

Imperial Oil Ltd., a majority-owned affiliate of ExxonMobil Corp. (Irving, Tex.) has completed construction of a renewable diesel facility at its Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, Canada, a milestone for Canadian operations. At full capacity, the facility is expected to be Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility, with the capacity to produce up to 20,000 barrels a day of lower-emission fuels.

The new renewable diesel facility at the Strathcona refinery now supplies customers in Western Canada and Imperial operations in Northern Alberta, Canada. Additionally, the facility is sourcing bio-feedstocks from Canadian agricultural suppliers to produce renewable diesel that can be used with no engine modifications, while also being well suited for Canada’s cold weather conditions. Fluor provided EPC services for the plant, and Air Products has been contracted for the supply of low-carbon hydrogen.

ExxonMobil remains focused on innovation, including the use of proprietary catalysts. A dedicated team and sound economic policies have helped drive this exciting chapter forward.
