LG Chem to begin producing bio-based polymers at two plants

| By Mary Bailey

LG Chem Ltd. (Seoul, South Korea) has obtained ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) Plus for bio-balanced products produced from renewable plant-based raw materials such as waste cooking oil and palm oil. LG Chem received ISCC Plus certification on nine bio-balanced products, including SAP (superabsorbent polymer), PO (polyolefin), and PC (polycarbonate) compounds, which are both the first and the most certifications in Korea.

ISCC Plus is an international certification system that meets the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directives, the most stringent standards in the world, serving as the major authority in identifying the sustainability of eco-friendly bio products.

It is considered the most reliable institution in eco-friendly certification with transparent screening standards and strict certification procedures, with over 130 eco-friendly raw material manufacturers, NGOs, and research institutes around the world registered as members.

With these certifications, LG Chem has laid the foundation for enhancing customer confidence in eco-friendly bio products and accelerating its expansion in related markets. LG Chem will start producing eco-friendly products using bio-materials from Neste in Finland at its Yeosu and Iksan plants in June this year.

In November 2020, LG Chem signed a memorandum of understanding with Neste in Finland, the world’s largest biodiesel company, which established the foundation for a stable supply of bio-materials necessary to produce eco-friendly products.

In general, research has shown that replacing fossil-derived raw materials with bio materials can reduce carbon emissions by about 50% compared to existing products, based on the same amount of input.

To objectively quantify the carbon reduction effect of each plant and product, LG Chem is conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with external specialists, which evaluates all environmental impacts that occur from raw material production to product shipment. The data derived from this process will be managed systematically.

“We have established the foundation to preoccupy the eco-friendly bio product market through ISCC Plus, the highest authority in the field of sustainability,” said President KUG LAE, NOH of LG Chem’s Petrochemicals Company.

“We will continue to expand ISCC Plus-certified products and workplaces to contribute to carbon neutrality and lead the ESG product market,” he added.
