Malaysia’s first melamine plant nears start of operation

| By Mary Bailey

Technip Energies (Paris)  has announced that Malaysia’s first melamine plant, developed for Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) – received its ‘Ready For Start Up’ (RFSU) certificate.

The plant at Kedah has a capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr). Among other features, it uses advanced Low Energy Melamine (LEM™) technology provided by Casale S.A. (Lugano, Switzerland) and connections with the existing urea plant.

Notably, the plant will strengthen Malaysia’s position in import substitution, value-added downstream manufacturing, and chemical diversification. Melamine is a chemical that can be used to manufacture plastics, building materials, industrial coatings, among others.

This latest development comes after the project was presented with prestigious safety awards by the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health, and the country’s Construction Industry Development Board in late 2024.

A consortium led by Technip Energies was awarded an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract by PCG in 2022 following the completion of an initial Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) project. The plant’s mechanical completion was achieved in January 2025.
