A natural fungicide An international research team, led by Yoshikazu Ohya at the University of Tokyo (www.ib.k.u-tokyo.ac.jp), has discovered a new chemical compound that inhibits the growth of pathogenic fungi. The new compound, called poacic acid, was isolated from hydrolyzed lignocellulose and its antifungal properties were studied by Ohya’s group, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Riken (Yokohama, Japan) and the University of Minnesota. Poacic acid was shown to be effective against several widespread fungal crop pathogens: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (white mold in a wide range of plants), Alternaria solani (early blight in potatoes and tomatoes) and Phytophthora sojae (root and stem rot in soybeans).
