Newsfront: Monitoring Corrosion Online and in Realtime

By Deborah Hairston |

Corrosion has the chemical process industries seeing red in their metal tanks and pipelines — and on the bottom line, too. In the U.S., for example, chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical producers incur direct costs of $1.7 billion/yr for corrosion, or 8% of capital expenditures, and that does not include costs for operations and maintenance. All totaled, reports the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE; nace.org; Houston), corrosion costs the U.S. economy $276 billion/yr, or 3% of gross domestic product. Included in the GDP are many of the products and services designed to combat corrosion. They range from protective coatings and specialty metals, to polymers and corrosion inhibitors. While these and other treatments effectively minimize the damage caused by corrosion, experts in the field say the war on corrosion is just beginning. Being deployed are corrosion transmitters and other devices that are geared to prevent corrosion. Such innovations represent a “paradigm shift,” in the focus on back-end remediation and maintenance, to front-end process control, says Russell Kane, director of corrosion services for Honeywell Process Solutions (Phoenix, Ariz.). This shift could turn into a full-blown…
