Outotec to modernize Norilsk Nickel’s smelter in Russia

By Gerald Ondrey |

Outotec Oyj (Espoo, Finland; www.outotec.com) has been awarded a contract by JSC MMC Norilsk Nickel to modernize and rebuild Norilsk Nickel’s nickel flash-smelting furnace at Nadezhda smelter in Norilsk, Russia. The contract value in these types of total rebuilds is typically €30–50 million. The order has been booked in Outotec’s 2014 fourth quarter order intake. Norilsk Nickel has licenses for two Outotec Flash Smelting Furnaces in Nadezhda smelter, which has been in operation since 1981. Changes in the raw material base and more demanding requirements for longer campaign life has led into the decision to modernize the nickel smelting furnace. Outotec’s delivery includes engineering, supply of a new Flash Smelting Furnace including modern proprietary equipment, advanced process control and cooling monitoring systems. Long-term technical service agreement will be separately negotiated during the delivery phase.
