What’s Inside Your Flow Meter Matters More Than You Think

| By Emerson

Rosemount™ Magnetic Flow Meters with the exclusive PEX liner deliver abrasion-resistant, PFAS-free performance for demanding water and wastewater processes.

Water and wastewater systems depend on accurate, reliable flow measurement to maintain treatment performance and consistent operation. Because a magnetic flow meter’s liner is continuously exposed to the process fluid, liner selection can directly affect measurement reliability, maintenance requirements, and meter service life.

Abrasive grit, sludge, entrained solids, treatment chemicals, and high-flow conditions can gradually wear conventional liners. Premature wear can lead to more frequent replacement, unplanned downtime, and rising maintenance costs. The PEX liner for Rosemount™ Magnetic Flow Meters is designed to withstand these demanding conditions while providing a PFAS-free option for modern water and wastewater systems.

Built to Withstand Abrasive and High-Solids Flows

The crosslinked molecular structure of PEX enhances the material’s toughness and durability, providing high abrasion resistance in processes containing grit, sludge, and entrained solids. This helps reduce premature liner wear and extend service life in raw sewage, waste activated sludge, return activated sludge, and other high-solids applications.

PEX also offers broad chemical compatibility for chemically treated water, including chlorination, coagulation, treatment, and dosing processes. With a temperature tolerance up to 203°F (95°C), it supports a wide range of water and wastewater operating conditions.

PFAS-Free Performance for Modern Water Systems

The PEX liner is formulated without PFAS, helping water and wastewater facilities respond to increasing environmental, regulatory, and public scrutiny while maintaining liner performance. NSF-61 Drinking Water certification supports its use in potable water and drinking water distribution applications.

For applications where fluoropolymer liners may be unnecessary, PEX provides an abrasion-resistant alternative that helps facilities avoid over-specification while still addressing durability, chemical compatibility, and potable water requirements.

Simplify Maintenance, Inventory, and Specification

Water and wastewater facilities may use different liner materials across clean water, treated water, sludge, and high-solids applications. Managing multiple materials can increase inventory requirements and make specification more complex. Because PEX can support both abrasive and non-abrasive water applications, facilities can use it across a broader range of measurement points. This versatility can simplify liner selection, reduce the number of liner materials that must be stocked, and make engineering validation more consistent. Its construction also avoids the liner flaring issues associated with some alternative materials, which can simplify meter storage, removal, and reinstallation.

Figure 1 caption: A magmeter contains electromagnetic coils inside the outer shell above and below the pipe, creating a magnetic field at right angles to the liquid flowing through the meter. When the liquid is conductive, its movement through the magnetic field creates a differential voltage in proportion to fluid velocity, which can be measured by the sensing electrodes on opposite sides of the pipe interior, thereby providing a direct liquid velocity measurement.

Designed for Water and Wastewater Applications

The PEX liner supports reliable, low-maintenance flow measurement across:

  • Raw sewage and grit-laden flows
  • Waste activated sludge and return activated sludge
  • Potable water and drinking water distribution
  • Chemically treated water
  • Chlorination, coagulation, and dosing processes
  • Utility and process water throughout treatment facilities
  • Other abrasive or high-solids water applications
