Saipem awarded pre-FEED contract for Synhelion’s commercial-scale synthetic fuel plant in Germany

| By Mary Bailey

Saipem S.p.A. (Milan, Italy) has been awarded a contract by Synhelion AG (Zurich, Switzerland), a producer of renewable synthetic fuels, to execute the pre-FEED (pre-Front-End Engineering Design) activities for a new commercial-scale synthetic fuel plant to be located at RWE AG‘s (Essen, Germany) Chemiepark Knapsack site in Hürth, Germany.

The plant is designed to produce approximately 30,000 metric tons per year of RED-compliant renewable synthetic fuels, primarily Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), as well as synthetic diesel and gasoline for the aviation, maritime, and road transportation sectors.

Under the contract, Saipem will develop the multidisciplinary pre-FEED engineering package required to define the overall plant configuration, integrating Synhelion’s proprietary technology, the fuel synthesis and upgrading processes, and the site infrastructure provided by RWE.

The engineering activities will form the technical basis for the permitting process, the subsequent FEED phase, and the future Final Investment Decision (FID).

With this award, Saipem further confirms its expertise in the development of complex industrial facilities and solutions to produce sustainable fuels.
