Siemens lands a new coal-gasification contract

Siemens Power Generation (Erlangen, Germany; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6892-542) has received a €-30-million contract from Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co., Ltd. (China) to supply two entrained-flow gasifiers — each with a thermal capacity of 500 MW — and further key equipment for a coal-gasification plant. The plant will be used for the Shenhua Ningmei DME (dimethyl ether) project in Ningxia Provence in northwestern China. When the plant starts operating in early 2009, Shenhua Ningmie DME will produce 830,000 m.t./yr of DME, said to be a clean, environmentally friendly synthetic fuel. The project is the first major coal-gasification-plant contract that Siemens has landed since the acquisition of the coal-gasification activities from Sustec Group last May. At that time, Siemens also announced plans to build a coal-gasification plant with a thermal capacity of 1,000 MW at Spreetal in Saxony. The synthesis gas from the Saxony plant will be used for producing power and approximately 600,000 m.t./yr of methanol.
