Tata Chemicals Ltd. (TCL; Mumbai, India; www.tatachemicals.com) announced that it has successfully commenced the commercial recovery of cathode active materials from spent lithium-ion cells/batteries. This further strengthens TCL’s commitment to longterm sustainable practices supporting a circular economy around the company’s Energy Sciences business.
TCL’s Li-ion battery-recycling operation recovers valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese at greater than 99% purity with industry-leading levels of yield, says the company. As a result, TCL will reduce environmental pollution, save energy and natural resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth. The recycling operations are carried out at a 3P facility located near Mumbai. The operations, launched at pilot scale, has successfully recycled spent Li-ion batteries, and TCL says is plans to scale it to recycle 500 tons of spent Li-ion batteries in the future.
