Técnicas Reunidas to supply hydrogen reformers for Dangote fertilizer complex in Ethiopia

| By Mary Bailey

Dangote Industries Ltd. (Lagos, Nigeria) has awarded Técnicas Reunidas, S.A. (Madrid, Spain) a contract to supply two hydrogen production reformers for the new ammonia and urea fertilizer complex that Dangote is developing in Gode, in Ethiopia’s Somali Region.

Dangote is a major industrial conglomerate founded in 1978 and operating in 17 African countries, with activities in sectors such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, fertilizers, cement, automotive and property, among others. Its estimated 2026 turnover is expected to be around $36 billion.

The Gode plant aims to use Ethiopia’s natural gas reserves to manufacture fertilizers, reduce dependence on imports and foreign exchange expenditure, and bolster the country’s agricultural supply. It will have an annual production capacity of 3 million tons of urea fertilizer, enabling it to meet demand from neighboring markets.

The contract includes the design, procurement, manufacture and free-on-board (FOB) supply of two reformers for producing the hydrogen required to generate ammonia and urea at the plant. The equipment will have a production capacity of over 200,000 Nm³/h (cubic meters of hydrogen per hour).

The equipment will be supplied within a maximum of 18 months by TR-Technical, the division of Técnicas Reunidas specializing in the design and supply of heat transfer equipment. The technology licensor for the reformers will be Topsoe A/S (Lyngby, Denmark), which specializes in chemical process technologies and catalyst manufacturing, particularly for the production of ammonia, hydrogen, fuels and other chemicals.

The contract follows the award of engineering services for a large green hydrogen plant in South Africa, recently announced by Técnicas Reunidas, and significantly expands the company’s presence in Africa. It puts Técnicas Reunidas in an excellent position to capitalize on new opportunities in the energy and fertilizer sectors across the continent, enables close collaboration with a leading technology licensor, and strengthens its position in low-carbon hydrogen production and its derivatives.
