This modified catalyst additive improves the yield and quality from FCC units

Conventional fluid-catalytic-cracking (FCC) catalysts are based on USY-type of zeolites (having a pore size of about 7.6 Å), which selectively decompose longer-chained hydrocarbons (HCs) into smaller HCs, gasoline components, light and heavy cycle oils and other products. ZSM-type zeolites have been used recently as additives because the smaller pore size (5.5 Å) allows the catalyst to decompose less-branched and shorter olefins than the USY zeolite. Catalysts & Chemicals Ind. Co., Ltd., (CCIC; Kawasaki, Japan; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6892-534) has developed and launched a phosphorous-modified version of its SAM-5 type additive that increases the octane number of gasoline as well as the yield of light olefins (including propylene and butene) compared to conventional additives. The OCTUP-11S additive is more resistant to high-temperature steam than its predecessor (OCTUP-11) and has an optimized pore distribution for the diffusion of lighter (C5–C12) olefins. Pilot tests were performed on a desulfurized vacuum-gas-oil feed (reaction temperature of 500°C and a 70% conversion rate) using OCTUP-11S at 4% loading.
