Thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany) has been awarded a major contract by POSCO E&C to design and supply a new low-emission, top‑charge coke oven battery for the POSCO Pohang Steelworks in South Korea. The new unit will replace the existing Battery #3A at the Pohang site. The design incorporates thyssenkrupp Uhde’s proprietary EnviBAT® technology, ensuring significantly reduced emissions during the coking process. The contract also includes engineering and supply of a state‑of‑the‑art MonoClaus® plant to replace the outdated two‑stage Claus units, as well as a new emission‑free tar separation plant to modernize the existing facility.
“With this state-of-the-art, low-emission facility, POSCO E&C and thyssenkrupp Uhde are making a meaningful contribution to enhancing the environmental performance of the POSCO Pohang Steelworks,” says Michael Petzinna, Executive Director of the Coke Plant Operating Unit. “We are pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with POSCO and POSCO E&C, which dates back to the 1970s, and are proud to contribute our decades of plant engineering and process expertise to this project.”
The project is part of POSCO’s broader modernization program for its coke plants. As part of this initiative, the original Battery #3A from the 1980s will be shut down and replaced by new, low-emission, state-of-the-art systems. The order covers technology provision, engineering, equipment procurement, site supervision services, and commissioning support. POSCO E&C and thyssenkrupp Uhde are acting as reliable partners for this EP pad‑up project, combining extensive plant engineering experience with highly efficient technologies designed to meet – and exceed – stringent environmental standards.
thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviBAT® single‑chamber pressure regulation system is already successfully operating in more than 30 batteries and over 2,100 ovens worldwide. Continuous, intelligent pressure monitoring and adjustment throughout the coking cycle optimizes raw material use while drastically reducing emissions. By preventing pressure peaks at the initial stages of the coking process, EnviBAT® virtually eliminates emissions through oven doors and the battery roof. Additional emission‑reducing design features – such as flexible, spring‑loaded door systems and water‑filled rising pipe covers – further enhance environmental performance.
