thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany) has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) study by an affiliate of CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (Northbrook, Ill.), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of hydrogen and nitrogen products, for a proposed new urea liquor upgrade plant at CF Industries’ Courtright facility in Ontario, Canada. The project was recently highlighted by CF Industries as part of its strategic growth initiatives.
Subject to a positive final investment decision (FID), the project could add more than 400,000 short tons per year of diesel exhaust fluid capacity, according to CF Industries.
Nadja Håkansson, member of the Executive Board and COO of thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies (Dortmund, Germany) and CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, said: “We are proud to support CF Industries in evaluating this strategic growth opportunity. By enabling greater utilization of existing CO₂ resources, the Courtright project has the potential to strengthen production capacity while creating additional value from existing assets. The award underscores the trust our customers place in our fertilizer and process technology expertise.”
CF Industries operates one of North America’s largest ammonia production networks and continues to invest in projects that strengthen its production platform and meet growing customer demand. The proposed project demonstrates how existing industrial assets can be enhanced through process integration technologies, enabling the productive use of CO₂ streams that are currently underutilized for the production of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), a widely used reagent for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines.
The award further strengthens thyssenkrupp Uhde’s position as a leading partner for the fertilizer and chemicals industries, providing innovative technology solutions and engineering excellence to customers worldwide.
