Toyo awarded contract to provide urea production technology in India

| By Gerald Ondrey

Toyo Engineering Corp. (Toyo; Chiba, Japan; www.toyo-eng.co.jp) has concluded a contract covering licensing and development of basic design for a urea production plant in the fertilizer complex to be constructed at Kanpur in the State of Uttar Pradesh by Jaiprakash Associates Ltd. (JAL), a company of India’s Infrastructural conglomerate, Jaypee Group.

India is now confronted with a growing demand for fertilizer to increase food production to meet the rising demand prompted by the growing population. Many companies now plan to build fertilizer plants to cover such needs. Against this background, JAL has decided to make their new way into the fertilizer business.

The planned fertilizer complex will consist of an ammonia plant with a production capacity of 2,200 ton/d and a urea plant with two trains of 1,925 ton/d each. The ammonia process will be based on the technology from KBR (Hourston; www.kbr.com) and  the urea process will utilize Toyo’s own technology. Toyo  has completed eleven fertilizer projects in India since it built its first urea plant in 1963. Toyo ‘s latest process called ACES21 has an advantage in low utility consumption and construction costs. This will be the eighth plant applied ACES21 worldwide.
