Turn wastewater into a source of low-cost electricity

| By Kate Torzewski

The Megawatter platform is a commercial implementation of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) technology for direct electricity or hydrogen generation on a large scale, while using wastewater as fuel by treating the organic materials dissolved in water as a source of energy. The systems produce electricity that can be fed into the grid on a constant baseload basis. Benefits of this technology include: wastewater treatment as a by-product of energy generation; carbon-free energy generation; reduced sludge; and efficiency even in extreme wastewater conditions. Megawatter systems have a number of targeted applications, including direct electricity generation, direct hydrogen production, de-nitrification of wastewater and heavy-metal removal from contaminated soil.
