Universal Display Corp. (Ewing, N.J.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/6516-547) has been awarded two new Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grants from the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE; Washington, D.C.) to enhance white OLED lighting technology. In the first grant, the company will collaborate with the Universities of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and Southern California (Los Angeles) to demonstrate a simplified (using two instead of three emissive dopants) path to a low-cost, highly efficient WOLED white-lighting device. The second grant, also in conjunction with the University of Michigan, aims to increase WOLED efficiency; the team hopes to demonstrate a device with a record total output coupling of 50%.
