A UV disinfection system with longer lamp life

| By Chemical Engineering

The Microdynamics Series OCS721 is a microwave-powered, open-channel ultraviolet (UV) system for water disinfection in municipal wastewater and water reuse applications. The device uses microwaves to energize low-pressure, high-output, electrode-less lamps to generate a UV wavelength output of 254 nm, according to the company, an optimal wavelength for bacterial disinfection. The product offers operating-cost savings, the company says, with lower whole-life cost and longer UV lamp life. The system is validated for water reuse by the National Water Research Institute, and features a flow-pacing technology that can match UV dose. Since microwave-powered lamps are electrode-less, they remove a major failure mechanism found in traditional UV lamp technology, the company adds. — Severn Trent Services, Fort Washington, Pa.
