Chementator: Controling corrosion and odor from sewers

At last month’s IFAT Trade Exhibition (May 5 – 9; Munich, Germany), Kemira Water (Helsingborg, Finland; edlinks.chemengonline.com/7373-542) introduced, H2S-Guard, a system that monitors, controls and protects against odor and corrosion in sewage networks. The system consists of H2S measurement devices that are placed in the sewer system to monitor H2S levels and other data, such as temperature and pump runtime. Data is automatically transmitted, via a built-in GPRS modem, to a control box, which automatically instructs dosing pumps when and how much chemicals to be dosed in order to prevent problems associated with H2S. All data is accessible and displayed via an internet connection through the H2S-Guard Web portal. Hydrogen sulfide is one of the prime causes of odor in sewers, and its metabolism by thiobaccilli under conditions of high humidity and oxygen produces sulfuric acid, which corrodes concrete pipes. With H2S-Guard, both problems can be minimized by preventive or curative measures. Preventive measures include dosing oxygen — in the form of nitrate salts — to avoid septic conditions.
