Chementator: Hydrogen power

By Chemical Engineering |

BP (London; edlinks.chemengonline.com/5827-544) and Edison Mission Group, a subsidiary of Edison International (Rosemead, Calif.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/5827-545), are planning a $1-billion, hydrogen-fueled power plant — said to be the first-of-a-kind — for generating electricity with minimal emissions of carbon dioxide. Detailed engineering is to be completed this year, and the final project investment decision to be made in 2008. If all goes as planned, the power plant will start up in 2011. The facility, to be located near BP’s Carson, California refinery, will combine proven technologies: petroleum coke from the refinery will be gasified into a mixture of H2 and CO2; about 90% of the CO2 will be separated, pipelined to an oilfield and injected into underground rock reservoirs; and the H2-rich gas burned in a gas turbine to generate 500 MW of electricity. The Carson refinery’s cokers are said to generate 3,000–4,000 m.t./d of petroleum coke.   Click here for a full pdf version of the Chementator Section
