Chementator: New TDI process

Bayer MaterialScience AG (BMS; Leverkusen, Germany; edlinks.chemengonline.com/5830-546) has developed a new process for producing toluene diisocyanate (TDI), a precursor for making flexible polyurethane foam. Without disclosing details, BMS says the process reduces investment costs by 20–30%, and energy consumption by 30%, compared to alternative TDI processes. The company plans to construct a fully integrated TDI production plant at its Caojing site near Shanghai, China. When the 160,000-m.t./yr plant starts up in 2009, it will be the first commercial application of the new process. A 30,000-m.t./yr demonstration facility has been operating at the Bayer Chemical Park in Dormagen for over a year.   Click here for a full pdf version of the Chementator Section
