Chementator: Non-invasive detector

By Gerald Ondrey |

Scientists at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (Chilton, Didcot, U.K.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/7370-573) have developed a laser-based method for the characterization of the bulk-chemical content of pharmaceutical capsules — without opening the capsules. In collaboration with researchers from Pfizer Ltd. (Tadworth, U.K.), the STFC team succeeded in quantifying the presence of the active drug ingredient in production-line relevant capsules to a relative error of 0.1%. Other established non-invasive methods were unable to achieve the same level of accuracy with the same sample, says STFC. The technology is based on a technique called spatially offset Raman spectroscopy, which is under development at STFC for applications including the detection of explosives in non-metallic containers; the detection of counterfeit drugs through opaque packaging; and the non-invasive diagnosis of bone disease and cancer. The new technologies are planned for commercialization through STFC’s spin-out company, LiteThru Ltd. (Warrington, U.K.; edlinks.chemengonline.com/7370-574).   Click here for a full pdf version of the Chementator Section
