Elessent Clean Technologies (St. Louis, Missouri) has announced the successful commissioning of its BELCO® integrated gas cleaning system at the TotalEnergies SE (Antwerp, Belgium) refinery. The new SOx scrubber entered operation on December 8 and is already significantly reducing sulfur oxide emissions from the refinery complex, reinforcing both companies’ commitments to environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
This installation marks the second BELCO® SOx scrubber at the Antwerp site. By treating flue gases from the refinery’s catalytic cracker, BELCO® technology supports effective sulfur removal in the purification unit. With this additional scrubber in service, TotalEnergies has reduced annual SOx emissions in alignment with requirements set by regulatory authorities as part of the facility’s reauthorization.
“In perspective of our long-term ambition, we are taking a giant step in making our Antwerp site more sustainable with this brand-new SOx scrubber,” said Ann Veraverbeke, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Antwerpen.
This milestone represents the culmination of a highly coordinated effort delivered safely, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. Through close collaboration during construction and commissioning, teams from TotalEnergies and Elessent successfully brought the unit online, reinforcing confidence in the refinery’s long-term development plans.
“The successful startup of this second BELCO® SOx scrubber at Antwerp reinforces the value our technology continues to provide to refiners around the world,” said Samantha Presley, VP Cleaner Refining, Elessent Clean Technologies. “We appreciate the trust TotalEnergies has placed in Elessent and are proud to support their emissions reduction strategy with proven, high-performance gas cleaning solutions.”
BELCO® technologies covers a complete range of gas cleaning technologies for industrial applications, including the BELCO® wet scrubber, SHELL third stage separator (TSS), and NOx reduction technologies.
