RO membrane modules for lower energy consumption

Last month at Aquatech China (Shanghai; June 5–7), this company introduced a new addition to its range of membrane-separation elements for reverse osmosis (RO)-based water treatment, namely, Low-Energy (LE) elements. Operating pressures of the LE elements are around 20 to 40% below those of the standard pressure elements, so the pumps in the RO plant that uses them will exhibit corresponding reductions in energy consumption, says the company. The LE membranes are particularly suited for the desalination of brackish water. The LE elements are spiral wound and made from a polyamide composite. Three product types are available, each with an average salt rejection of 99.5% at 10.5 bars (reference). — Lanxess AG, Leverkusen, Germany
